5 Questions with Htet Gyaw

22 Mar 2019

1. Can you please introduce yourself, tell us where you're from, and how long you've shot on film?

I'm Htet Gyaw (pronounced tet jaw), born in Burma and raised in the United States. Growing up, I was the kid that was always drawing. I had taken a few film photography classes in high school and college but it wasn't until I travelled on my own that I fell in love with photography. I loved shooting on my Canon 5D back then but it wasn't until over a year ago I decided to try color film photography.

2. Why do you like to shoot on film?

It is a gift, it is literally like opening presents when I pick up rolls of processed film from the lab. I go home to scan and I get to see what the hell I shot days, weeks, months prior, and when I get something I love, it's the best feeling. Also I simply love the look of film.

3. What’s your favorite gear to use (camera, lens, film) ?

I have too many to list but so far I'm trying to make the most out of the beast that is the Pentax 67.

4. Among your works, which one is your favorite? Why?

My newest is always my favorite! I like the worker sitting alone in the Chinatown restaurant. The gesture, the colors, the nighttime, when combined creates a story and mood of being alone in the city.

5. Exactly what it is you want to say with your photographs?

It depends on my series but for most of the photography I'm known for I'd say it's more of a love letter to remind me how beautiful a mood can be, even if it's a melancholic one.
